Learning the "How" of Qualitative Health Research

Hello Qualitative Mind,

Do you know the first step to learning the “how” of qualitative health research?

If you’ve been around for a while and following the Quali Q Blog, you might remember me quoting Janice Morse and saying how much I appreciate her writing. Last year, I inherited dozens of Qualitative Health Research volumes from Maria Mayan (my mentor), and the older volumes had editorials written by the one and only Dr. Morse. I told Maria those editorials are little pots of gold in my world of qualitative health research and the development of Qualitative Research Blueprint (QRB).

In volume 15 (n. 3) of Qualitative Health Research, Dr. Morse wrote about “Fostering Qualitative Research” and the various paths one can take to learning how to think qualitatively. My qualitative learning started in 2009 as a Masters student, and at that point I did a lot of learning from textbooks and by doing. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that I enjoy learning from mentors, and have two people who are key in my qualitative research learning. Recognizing that I thrive as a mentee has been so helpful to me. It enabled me to prioritize my learning activities and where it’s worthwhile to spend my brain power and time.

“Recognizing that I thrive as a mentee has been so helpful to me. It enabled me to prioritize my learning activities and where it’s worthwhile to spend my brain power and time.”

This was my inspiration to create the quiz “What Type of Qualitative Research Learner Are You?”. I want you to take stop right here and take TWO minutes to complete the quiz and discover your Learner Type. Having this type of clarity can be HUGELY helpful when planning out your qualitative research learning and growth. In case you are curious, the Qualitative Learner Types are: The Formal Learner, The Practical Learner, The Community Learner and The Mentee Learner. The learning types overlap in some ways but you’ll best identify with one of them.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to take the quiz and learn more about yourself as a qualitative health research learner!
